When I started playing D&D 7 years ago I didn't know anything about the game, hadn't watched a single episode of Critical Role or read any book. I just tried some random stuff and started playing with a group of friends who played every so often. I fell in love with the game almost instantly, the goofiness of characters, the combat and the story.
I've now been DM'ing for close to 5 years, most of my tables have at least 1 combat encounter in there somewhere because I love running combat and seeing what the players do with the powers that they have. I rule by cool, if you want to do something and explain how you do it well within the rules of D&D for sure you'll be able to do it.
And most of all, I love story and that's why I usually use the book written by Wizards of the Coast and run the campaign per one-shot. Each player is allowed to join sessions or decide to not join the next, you're free to do as you like.
Enough about me, I'll see you at the table!
